HOW TO CELEBRATE EID WITH @_khadijaa_
We sat down with @_khadijaa_ to find out what Eid means to her, how she’ll be celebrating this year, and of course, what she’ll be wearing. Picking her favourite looks from our selection of modest clothing, she’s put together a stylish edit of her favourite bits that will last way beyond the Eid celebrations.
What does Eid al-fitr mean to you?
There’s something beautiful about celebrating with Muslims all over the world. It’s a time of celebration after a month of devoting yourself to God. For me it’s always bittersweet, because it’s the realisation that the month of Ramadan that brought us all together has also come to an end.
How are you celebrating Eid this year?
For us, Eid is all about family, so we always spend the first day together. A typical Eid morning is to go to the mosque for Eid salah (prayer), followed by pictures for the ‘gram in our Eid outfits of course! We then head to my aunt’s house, where we spend the day eating good food with even better company.
What’s your favourite part of the day?
Going to the mosque on Eid morning. It’s such a beautiful sense of community and a little reminder that you’re connected to something so much bigger than yourself.
Are there any traditions that are unique to you?
Coffee and contemplation. Mornings are peaceful so I like taking a moment for myself.
It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of the day and forget that you still need to practice the good habits you spent building in Ramadan.
What are your top tips on how to celebrate this year? What other ways can people celebrate?
There’s really no one way to celebrate Eid, everyone has their own traditions. Focus on being present and enjoying the moments and people that matter. For me, there’s nothing better than surrounding myself with the people who make me the happiest.
What’s your favourite food to celebrate with and why?
Pancakes! It’s the little things, and there’s nothing like that first breakfast (and sip of coffee) on Eid morning.
What will you be wearing for Eid this year?
I’m not always as organised as I like to be, so I don’t have it perfected just yet! My style is quite minimal so I’ll most likely be keeping it neutral this year.
Would you say that dressing up is a big part of celebrating? Why?
Think fashion week then multiply that by 10! I always look forward to seeing what everyone will wear and how they’ll incorporate their own style into each outfit. But putting aside the fun of dressing up, the main reason it’s such a big element of Eid is because it’s part of our religious practice to wear your best clothes on the day. Kind of like putting your best foot first for new beginnings.
Describe your modest style in 3 words?
Minimal, comfy and chic!
