How to dress in a summer storm

It’s been a soggy summer. From high temperatures one day to gale force winds and torrential rain the next, you’d be forgiven for having absolutely no idea what to wear.

We’re at the mercy of the elements and currently they’re keeping us on our toes. Fingers crossed we’ve seen the last of the summer storms, but if not here’s how to waterproof your wardrobe.

Wake up, it's hot and steamy! Not in that way (sadly), more in a muggy 24 degree rain-all-day way. To get to work bone dry, a raincoat is a must. Go for an understated black one to maximise wearability whilst looking refined even in sudden downpours. On steamy days like these opt for cool fabrics like linen blend and cotton to help your skin breathe. Offset the ditsy floral print of this cotton dress with a practical pair of chelsea boots made for dry and wet terrain. And finally, the divisive bucket hat. Whether you’re for or against, there’s no denying that this patent one is a great wearable umbrella.

Time to brighten up the doom and gloom with a pop of colour - it’s still summer after all. Slip your raincoat off when the sun shines to reveal an aqua green striped shirt that is equal parts playful and professional - a great option if after-work drinks are in the diary. Pair with linen shorts and a staple tank top to form a cooling summer in the city base, perfect when even the strongest handheld fan can’t keep the commute sweat at bay.

This outfit is for the people who have been burnt by freak showers before but refuse to wear a raincoat in July. Fair enough. As long as you pack an umbrella, an oversized denim jacket should be enough to keep dry especially if you also layer smartly. Start with a tank top (a great heatwave base layer) and cotton cargo pants with cuffed hems to avoid soggy bottoms. If it’s forecast to rain, wear something other than white unless you want a surprise see-through situation on your hands. Finish off with comfy trainers and an oversized tote bag to shove all your whatever-the-weather essentials into.
