What to wear for a summer of sport

Are you a superstitious sports fan? Lean into the delulu by sporting an outfit so good that your team can’t not win. Don’t worry, you can still run up and down the stairs and rub your lucky trainers like usual too. Whether you’re impatiently waiting for the Premier League to start or have treated yourself to a cheeky trip to New York for the US Open, here’s what to wear for good luck and good looks.

The Rugby World Cup

Perfectly timed to help you mourn the end of summer, the Rugby World Cup kicks off in France on the 8th of September. Unless you’re a mega fan or a Francophile, we assume you’ll be staying local and watching the rugger at your local pub with a pint in hand. So, your normal pub attire will do. The weather will be cooler come September so go for a  long sleeve funnel knit and jeans to keep warm.

The Premier League

Cheer on your team in a winning look that prioritises comfort, because sitting on those plastic chairs for 90 minutes plus stoppage time is no easy feat. Keep your kit casual, starting with a pair of washed cargos, a fresher take on the styles we’ve been sporting during the first half of the year and a simple polo shirt. For games later on in the season, add a thick overcoat to warm you up in ways a pitchside Pukka just can’t do.

The Anthony Joshua fight

If you missed the Anthony Joshua fight on the 12th of August there’s plenty of other matches to attend this August. Tensions will be running high wherever you’re seated but dressing appropriately for your section will take the heat off of you at least. The general rule of thumb is: the closer to the ring you are, the smarter you dress. So, if you’re a VIP, wear a suit. If you’re sitting further away, think smart casual. Below the belt, black skinny jeans are a great option. Pair with a ribbed, muscle-fit polo shirt and a knock out pair of smart(er) trainers to look ringside ready (even if you’re up in the rafters.)

The US Open

Word on the street is that the Big Apple is roasting right now. If you’ve booked tickets to a day session, wear something light and breezy to stay dry. Remember: if you're sweatier than the players, something has gone wrong. Ace your Grand Slam look by sticking to the U.S. Open’s preppy past. Clean lines and classic colours like navy and cream are bang on the money. Keep cool in a smart pair of chino shorts and linen shirt unbuttoned halfway. Game, set and match.
