RI Rates: Doughnuts

Of all the National Days, National Doughnut Day just might be our favourite. In a time where we need to seek out the little pleasures, treating yourself to a doughy ball of delight is a way to do just that! We all have our favourite go-to doughnuts, whether we like to keep it classic or if we’re up for getting a little bit experimental. We’ve decided to rate 5 different doughnuts because… well, just because.

*Many doughnuts were harmed in the making of this

The Original Glazed from Krispy Kreme. Their signature doughnut. A recipe that’s been perfected since 1937. Older than you, older than your parents. They say you should respect your elders and that’s exactly what we’re doing. It’s plain and simple but in the best way and we can’t quite get over that melt-in-the-mouth Krispy Kreme texture. Top marks from us.

If you’re all about dough’ing it for the ‘gram, you’ll be aware of Doughnut Time. They’re big, they’re bold, they’re gloriously extra, but it’s not all for show. As delicious as they look, they pack as much of a punch in flavour, as they will on your feed. A load of exciting flavours and combos to choose from, we’re drooling like Homer Simpson for these.

When it’s good, it’s good, when it’s ok it’s… disappointing. Let us start by saying we’re not shaming the humble jam doughnut, it’s just hard to find a great one. You know how it goes, you’re craving a sweet treat, you hit the supermarket bakery, buy a bag of sugary jam doughnuts, bite into one and it’s just… a bit dry and sad.

Is it a doughnut? Is it a croissant? Is it just a doughnut-shaped croissant? These are the questions that keep us up at night. The cronut was born in New York in 2013 and has been confusing us ever since. While there’s no denying it’s a mouth-wateringly delicious sweet treat, it just doesn’t satisfy us in the way that a true doughnut does. Sorry.

Is it vegan? Yes. Do you have to be vegan to enjoy it? Absolutely not! If you live in London and you haven’t tried a Crosstown Doughnut, why not? Made in-house, by hand, their peanut butter and jam doughnut is the (pea)nuts and you wouldn’t know it was dairy free. Trust us when we say we dream of this little guy. And if you don’t live in London, it’s definitely worth the trip (when you can).

If you're not satisfied with your local supermarket's selection of doughnuts, why don't you order one of Doughnut Time's DIY kits? With different options to choose from (Biscoff, anyone?) it's a chance to get creative AND get some of that sweet Doughnut Time dough in your mouth. Win-win we say!
