You’ve Got This With Tete García

Meet Tete García, a Spanish illustrator based in Southsea, chosen by us to help create our feel-good collection of positive affirmations for International Women's Day. Working both in studios and freelance, Tete likes to take the everyday moments of life and her surroundings as an inspiration for her work. Using different techniques, she says: "is also one of my favourite things to do, and that's how I am able to evolve more as an illustrator".

What does International Women’s Day mean to you?

I remember that when I was a teenager it was a day of celebration, but the past few years has shown me that it is more a day for our voices to be heard, to reclaim our rights, and most importantly, for every single woman in the world to be respected and recognised as equal.

Why did you choose this particular affirmation? What inspired you to create it?

I have always believed in the concept of community and finding support from it. When it comes to women’s rights it’s very important to stick together. We still have a long road to go, but together will make it easier. I am still educating myself on feminism and try to re-learn certain things, and I am going through it with the support of other women and what they have to share.

Do your Spanish roots influence you as an artist? Or your Southsea surroundings?

I think you get a little hint of my funny personality with my illustrations; I guess that’s my Spanish side. When I moved to the UK almost 4 years ago, it was a big challenge, but one that I am very proud of. Southsea has been a great place to be. I’ve always liked to take moments of life as an inspiration for my work. Whether it's nature, people, animals, music... I find inspiration in quotidian moments and objects.

What three words would you use to describe your illustrations?

Fun, colourful, and creative.

How did you first get into illustration?

Probably when I was about six. I asked my mum to change my ballet classes to painting classes. I will say that after my Fine Arts career, I started being more interested in design. The past year has been great for me as I have been able to find my own style and I really enjoy the process of learning and discovering new things

If you could have dinner with any female-identified icon, alive or dead, who would you pick?

I have recently learned more about Yoko Ono. I think it could be cool to have a chat with her and know more about her life and her art.
