ASK A STYLE ICON: MEN'S OCCASIONWEAR
You've probably got (near enough) a million questions when it comes to men's wedding suits, the smart casual code for men and maybe even just how to make your men's smart trousers and blazer stretch further than that one special occasion. We caught up with style columnist and TV host Darren Kennedy and asked him all the questions you need answers to *right* now.
How can I style a men's suit for every occasion?
It’s important to remember that when you buy a two-piece suit you are in fact purchasing two independent pieces for your wardrobe. Always break down the pieces and think about them this way. A simple switching out a shirt to a crisp white T-shirt or sweater and a pair of white trainers will create a completely different suit look. Also, there's nothing to say that the blazer or trousers can't be worn independent of each other. The possible variations are actually quite impressive!
How do I choose a men's wedding suit?
Choosing a suit for your wedding is an important task. If in doubt, stick to classic styling. That’s not to say that you can’t inject some personality. For me, it means contemporary men's coloured suits in a vibrant shade that looks and feels good on the body and adding touches of personality through my pocket square, bowtie/tie or even a pair of socks.

What are some styling hacks for formal looks?
The rules have really been rewritten and you can wear a suit in so many different ways. For instance, replace a shirt and tie with a bandana tied in a knot around your neck with a crew neck sweater or denim shirt for an effortlessly cool look. Another way to mix up your suit is with your footwear. Cuban heels and chunky boots with zips and hardware can add some swagger to a suit. Accessories such as tie-pins, collar bars and bracelets will all add personality.

How do you make jeans ‘smart’?
Jeans span a wide spectrum and there are so many different styles - some with rips, bleached etc. A simple rule of thumb is to remember that the darker the denim, the easier it is to make it look smart. For example, a dark Indigo pair of denim jeans can easily be sharpened up with a nice pair of men's Chelsea boots, sweater and a blazer.
What can I wear for a smart/casual dress code?
Think about the basics worn without some of the classic accessories. Even just wearing a shirt with an open collar creates a completely more laid-back aesthetic. A pair of chinos and a nice shirt can create a super simple smart casual look. I am a big fan of tonal dressing, which means wearing one colour in various shades from head to toe. For example, multiple shades of navy in one outfit can really elevate casual pieces for a smart overall look.
What other colours can I wear apart from black, navy and grey when it comes to men's suits?
There are so many options when it comes to suiting these days. I really enjoy the lighter pastel shades; think pale blue, pale pink, pastel green or lilac if you’re feeling brave enough. All of these lend themselves so well to dressing for the warmer months.
