BEHIND THE DESIGN: DEL MAAR X RIVER ISLAND

MEET THE FOUNDER OF DEL MAAR

Our Behind the Design series, which sees us collaborate with independent creatives around the world, continues with the launch of a limited-edition collection with Latin brand, Del Maar. Inspired by Peruvian folklore and handcrafted traditions, working closely with our in-house design team, the pieces feature bold prints and vibrant colours that bring Latin heritage to life.

For Pamela Davila Uyen, the creative mind behind the Del Maar label, fashion is a way to connect cultures across the world. We sat down with her to discuss her inspiration, creative process, and how this collaboration embodies her passion for cultural exchange.

1. What motivated you to start Del Maar?

I’ve always felt a deep excitement when thinking about everything that each country and culture has to offer, and how much we can grow as individuals by discovering different cultures and integrating the best parts of them into our lives. This passion led me to travel the world from a young age, studying and living in different countries. In Australia, learning from and getting to know a culture so different from my own made me want to share what my country had to offer. So, I started looking for ways to do that.

At the same time, I have always been a strong advocate for women’s empowerment. One way or another, the opportunity to work with Peruvian and Latina artisans came into my life, and I thought it was incredible to be able to promote and elevate their work, enhancing it through cutting-edge fashion. It became the perfect opportunity to showcase, through sustainable fashion, the richness and beauty of Latin culture while empowering women along the way.

2. Can you describe the creative process and influences behind your designs?

I’m a free spirit when it comes to designI let the essence of each collection inspire and guide me. My process is filled with serendipities; beautiful coincidences that happen without being planned, simply by vibing with the energy of love and passion that drives each collection.

3. How does being a female-founded brand influence your creative vision?

It allows me to embrace freedom, intuition, and empowerment. My journey as a woman has led me to work closely with female artisans, particularly from Peru and Latin America. As a female designer, I approach my work with a sense of freedom and emotional connection. This collection reflects my belief in the strength and creativity of women.

4. What was it like to work with a fashion brand and see your work inhabit a new space?

It has been a deeply rewarding experience. From the start, I’ve aimed to create a brand that not only connects with people globally but also celebrates cultural diversity and showcases Latino essence and art to the world. It’s been amazing to witness how fashion can serve as a bridge, bringing together different cultures and ideas.

5. What feeling do you hope customers take away from wearing your pieces?

I hope customers feel the joy, passion, and Latino essence that inspired this collection while also feeling comfortable and confident. I want them to feel connected to something bigger when they wear my pieces. It’s about wearing something that not only looks good but also feels meaningful.
